To capture the night sky, you need to understand how your camera, lens, tripod and settings selected work together. Learn the techniques needed on this on location, hands on workshop. Come capture something magical.

Experience level: You need a basic understanding of how to use your camera in manual mode.

Throughout the workshop, we will discuss:

  • The Exposure Triangle:

  • Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO

  • Shutter speed / exposure duration and using ISO are extremely important when photographing at night, we discuss how it impacts your images.

  • White Balance

  • Obtaining manual focus in the dark & the 500 rule, to avoid streaky stars.

  • Composition and how to navigate a scene by night

  • Adding a human element into your image

  • Mobile apps used for Astro Photography planning

This workshop is a great way, if you've always wanted to learn how to shoot stars or learning the required settings for capturing Aurora but been cautious or hesitant to go alone at night. Come learn in a small group, hands on workshop. What you need:

  • Camera that is under 10 years old and has ISO abilities of 3200-6400

Please Note: There are 100’s of cameras on the market, while I am familiar with many, some hybrid cameras I less familiar with which can be trickier to use in low light situations.

  • Wide angle lens that allows you to manual focus (24mm or under)

  • Tripod (if you don’t have one, let me know I have some to borrow)

  • Remote shutter release (optional)

  • Head torch (with a red light if possible)

Max 3-6 people for this workshop (location dependant) and runs for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

The workshop is kept small, so everyone gets ample time for help and to ask questions. See what people have said about my workshops here.

Supported by Samyang Optics Australia who are known for their premium night scape lenses, I have a range of mounts available for Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fuji. Please let me know before the workshop if you’d like to borrow one.
